After a two-year journey, the Agritourism permit finally came through, albeit not without its fair share of hurdles. Currently, I’m knee-deep in viticulture and enology classes through the VESTA National Center, alongside mentorships at local vineyards near and far. Countless emails have been exchanged with experts from Michigan State Extension, University of Minnesota, and Cornell Extension, among others, as I diligently build relationships and gather insights.
Soil tests conducted in 2021 yielded promising results, with pH levels and nutrient levels mostly within range. Yet, only time will reveal the true needs of the plants and the amendments necessary for optimal growth.
Opting for cold-climate hybrid grapes from the University of Minnesota’s breeding program seemed the most prudent choice for our region. Not only do these varieties promise a viable crop, but they also offer an opportunity to introduce new flavors to our predominantly vinifera-focused community.
With vines ordered and plans in motion, March 2022 saw Brian, our boys, and me laying the groundwork for the High Wire Trellis system—a big step towards realizing our vision.
As May 4th approaches, anticipation mounts for the arrival of the vines, marking the beginning of a new chapter. With two acres ready and waiting, the planting frenzy between May 5th and 11th signals that it’s finally “go time!”
